With the idea of building a Swiss Big Band of international standing, Robert George and Stefan Geiser founded the Swiss Jazz Orchestra (SJO) in Bern in September 2003. Following the example of the New York “Vanguard Orchestra”, the SJO has performed weekly in Bern ever since. The vibrant orchestra was careful assembled from leading Swiss jazz musicians, and can look back on around 350 concert appearances. It also contains many famous leaders and sidemen from Swiss bands of varying styles. In the six years of its existence, the SJO has become a vital part of the Swiss jazz scene, and caters to a growing and varied audience.
The Bern bandoneónist Michael Zisman stands in the center of “Close Encounter” as soloist and composer. The trumpet player Bert Joris has arranged compositions for the Big band, by both Michael and himself, in an incredibly colourful and sensitive manner.
