Formed in the spring of 2019 as a trio featuring Tobias Altripp on piano, Moritz Koser on double bass, and Micha Jesske on drums, the ensemble has expanded its sonic horizons by welcoming Marc Doffey on tenor saxophone and Gabriel Rosenbach on trumpet and flugelhorn for this dynamic album.
The diverse range of compositions includes “A Waltz Nobody Wants To Dance To”, a title inspired by a prominent memory from Altripp’s study days, and the lively “The Bash Lords with the Slash Chords,” featuring a hard bop-styled theme played by Marc Doffey and Gabriel Rosenbach. As the album unfolds, Altripp delves into intriguing concepts, such as titling compositions as questions, as seen in “How’s it called.” The ballad “So Close,” inspired by Matt Rollings’ arrangement of “Someone to Watch Over Me,” explores the theme of proximity during the challenging times of the Corona pandemic. The track titled “Is It Still A Thing?” prompts reflection on the relevance of Neo Bop in the present day. Closing the album is a homage to early BeBop, “Daa-Hee-Yaa-Hee-Yaa”.
“We Bring Some Horns” not only signifies a milestone for the Tobias Altripp Trio but presents an engaging album that showcases their artistic growth and promises to resonate with a diverse audience. Recorded with precision and artistry, this album invites listeners to experience the creative essence of the Tobias Altripp Trio and the vibrant energy they bring to the world of contemporary jazz.
